This section is the first part of the primary electrical knowledge, "three phase AC circuit".

In the preceding courses, we learn one-way alternating current, but in actual production, three phase alternating current is commonly used, which is sent by three phase generator and transmitted by three-phase power transmission system to users. The three phase AC circuit is formed by the correct connection of the three-phase AC power supply and the load with the transmission line.

The three phase alternating current has the advantages of convenient and economical electric energy transportation, and the three power is less than the single phase power. Therefore, it has been widely used. A three-phase AC circuit usually refers to a sinusoidal electromotive force with three equal maximum values, the same frequency and a phase difference of 120 degrees in the circuit. The part of each electromotive force is called a "phase".

The analytical expression of the three-phase AC electromotive force waveform and the phase relation of the three-phase alternating current EMF is expressed as follows:

Ev=Emsin (omega T-120)
ew=Emsin（ωt+120°）
Ew=Emsin (omega t+120)

Its waveform and phasor are as shown in the right picture above.

The three phase sinusoidal electromotive force (EMF), which is equal in amplitude, with the same frequency, and 120 degrees to each other, is called the symmetric EMF.

The following three phase electromotive force, if not specified, refers to the symmetric EMF.

The characteristic of the symmetric EMF is that the sum of the instantaneous value of the three phase EMF is constant.

In practical application, the commonly used sequence of U-V-W said three phase electromotive force of the sequence, the so-called phase refers to the three-phase electromotive force by order of the maximum value and zero value, which is compared to the U V phase electromotive force of 120 degrees ahead; compared to the V W phase electromotive force of 120 degrees ahead; compared to the W U phase electromotive force of 120 degrees ahead.

In three windings, it is irrelevant which item to locate the U phase, but once the U phase is set, then V and W are set in order. That is, 120 degrees lag U phase is V, compared to the V lag 120 degrees is W phase, this order can not be confused. So the phase sequence of U-V-W is called the CIS order.
